Specialists in Trauma Resolution, and Stress-related disorders

Psychologists at Bay Road Counselling & Psychology offer a healing, safe place for you to receive counselling, therapy and treatment. We specialise in navigating the often confusing and overwhelming sea of human emotions. We are able to help you develop meaning by making sense of your thoughts, feelings and body sensations, and to assist you with developing resources and strategies so that you have a greater capacity to deal with life’s overwhelming experiences.
“With unresolved trauma, rigidity and chaos imprison the person’s possibilities. Good therapy transforms the brain of the client to totally shift their centre of attention. …Track your [mind and body] and you transform.”  Francine Shapiro, Trauma Specialist and founder of EMDR
What is trauma? Trauma, unfortunately, is a fact of life, and is something that every human will experience in their lifetime, even if it is just a minor event. Trauma is a psycho-physical experience, even when the traumatic event does not cause direct bodily harm. None the less, trauma challenges and overwhelms our brain and body’s capacity to cope and respond, leaving us unable to regain our former equilibrium. Trauma, therefore, is seen to be any event in one’s life that remains stuck, locked or unresolved, and has a lasting impact on the body and brain.

Treatment Theory is a trauma therapist’s most valuable tool, because understanding the mechanisms of trauma as proposed by psychological, neurological and psychobiological theoretical models aids treatment and creates lasting outcomes. Integrated trauma therapy must consider and utilize tools for identifying, understanding, and treating trauma’s effects on both the mind and body. When healing trauma, it is critical to give attention to both the mind and body: neither of these can be neglected. Treatments approaches offered by Bay Road Counselling & Psychology include:

    • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
    • Mindfulness
    • Strength-based treatment
    • Child and adolescent counselling
    • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
    • Somatic Experiencing (SE)
    • Brain spotting (advanced treatment model based on EMDR)
    • Hypnosis

“Trauma really does confront you with the best and the worst. You see the horrendous things that people do to each other, but you also see resiliency, the power of love, the power of caring, the power of commitment, the power of commitment to oneself, the knowledge that there are things that are larger than our individual survival. And in some ways, I don’t think you can appreciate the glory of life unless you also know the dark side of life”.  Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Trauma Specialist
